Quiz conditions that discourage AI shortcuts
Tick SBQ mode and the quiz runs under quiz conditions: one attempt per question, copying turned off, and a flag on every answer given after a student left the page. On iPads, you can also lock the device to the quiz with Safe Exam Browser.
SBQ mode, quiz conditions and Safe Exam Browser are available on every plan. Seeing which answers came after a student left the page, on the live grid and in reports, is part of class analytics, included with ClassKite Plus and the School plan.
The problem
A student can photograph a quiz question, ask an AI and type in the answer in under a minute. You can't watch thirty screens at once, and after the quiz a perfect score looks the same however it was earned.
Discourage it, see it — and on iPads, lock it down
SBQ mode (School Based Quiz) is ClassKite's one-attempt quiz, and it runs under quiz conditions automatically. Copying, cutting and dragging the question text are turned off, while answer boxes work normally and text can still be selected for screen readers and Speak Selection. Full screen is required on devices that support it, and you can untick it. For every answer, the student's device notes whether they left the page for 5 seconds or more, or tried to copy the question, while that question was on screen. Students see a note telling them that you can see this, which is what makes it work. During the quiz, each student's card counts the answers given after leaving; open a student to see which answers and why, and your reports add an "After leaving" column. On iPads you can go a step further and require Safe Exam Browser, a free app that locks the iPad to the quiz until you end the session.
How it works
- 1
Tick SBQ mode
When you start the live session, tick SBQ mode. Quiz conditions and Require full screen come with it.
- 2
Add Safe Exam Browser (iPads)
Optionally tick Require Safe Exam Browser. Students open the quiz in the app and sign in there.
- 3
Watch the grid
Each card shows the answers given after leaving the page and, with Safe Exam Browser, whether the student is in it.
- 4
Talk, then release
Treat a flag as a reason to talk with the student, then release the results when you're ready.
In the classroom
Before Friday's end-of-topic quiz, a teacher ticks SBQ mode and Require Safe Exam Browser. Students open the quiz in the app on their iPads, and each card shows "In Safe Exam Browser". A student who relies on dictation is let in without it. Students who finish early wait on a holding screen, and when the teacher ends the session, every iPad unlocks by itself.
What you get
Copying turned off
Students can't copy, cut or drag the question text into another app. Answer boxes work as normal.
Every answer noted
See which answers came after a student left the page for 5 seconds or more, or tried to copy the question.
Students are told
A note on the quiz tells students what you can see, so the conditions deter before they detect.
Safe Exam Browser on iPads
Lock the iPad to the quiz: no app switching, Home screen, Control Center or screenshots until you end the session.
An exit code for emergencies
Let one student out early with an exit code only you can see. It works without internet.
Exemptions for any student
Let a student in without Safe Exam Browser or full screen, for example one who needs dictation or has no iPad.
Frequently asked questions
Can ClassKite stop students taking a screenshot?
No website can block or detect a screenshot, on any device. That is why quiz conditions focus on what can be noticed: leaving the page and copying the question. On iPads, Safe Exam Browser does block screenshots, because it is an app rather than a website. Nothing on screen can stop a photo taken with a phone, so phones away during the quiz still matters.
Is a flag proof that a student used AI?
No. A flag means the student left the page for 5 seconds or more, or tried to copy the question, while it was on screen. There may be a good reason. Treat it as a reason to talk with the student, not as proof.
Do students know about quiz conditions?
Yes. The quiz shows a note: "Quiz conditions: your teacher can see if you leave this page or copy a question." Students never see the flags themselves.
Which devices can use Safe Exam Browser?
Safe Exam Browser in ClassKite is for iPads; students install the free app from the App Store. Chromebooks and Android devices can't run it, so let those students in without it. Quiz conditions still apply to them.
What happens when a student finishes early?
They see a waiting screen and stay locked in. Safe Exam Browser closes by itself shortly after you end the session. If a student's Wi-Fi drops, they stay locked and are released when it comes back. If nobody ends the session, students are released automatically three hours after it started.
How do I let one student out early?
Open their card and tap "Show the exit code". The student taps Quit in Safe Exam Browser and types the code. It works without internet, and only you can see it.
Do students need full screen on an iPad?
No. Safari on iPads and iPhones interrupts typing in full-screen websites, so those devices are never asked to use full screen. Leaving the page is still noticed.
Which plan do I need?
SBQ mode, quiz conditions and Safe Exam Browser work on every plan. The live grid and reports, where you see which answers came after leaving, are part of ClassKite Plus and the School plan.
