Add Students to Your Class: Join Codes and Imports

Before a class can practise, its students need to be in it. ClassKite gives you two straightforward ways to get them there: students can join with your class code, or you can add them yourself by importing a list. This guide walks through both, so you can choose the one that suits your class.

Option 1: students join with your class code

Every class has its own join code. You will find it in the class panel under Class join code, with buttons to copy it or generate a new one, and it is also shown on your dashboard and at the top of the Smart Board. Write it on the board, read it out, or paste it into a message to the class.

What happens next depends on whether the student already has an account:

New students choose Join a Class on the ClassKite sign-in page, enter the class code and create their account in the same step.
Students who already have an account enter the code in the Join a Class card on their dashboard.

Depending on your school's settings, students are added to the class straight away, or they appear as requests for you to approve with a single click. Either way, you always know who is in your class.

If a code ends up somewhere it should not, generate a new one. The old code stops working, and students already in the class are not affected.

Option 2: import your class list

If you already have a list of names, it is often quicker to add the students yourself. In the class's Add Student card, choose Import List:

Download the template and fill in each student's first name, last name and email address. A student ID number is optional.
Upload the completed Excel file. You can add up to 100 students at a time.
Check the preview. ClassKite flags duplicate entries and email addresses that look mistyped before anything is created.
Confirm the import. ClassKite creates the accounts and enrols every student in your class, with no approval step.

ClassKite creates a one-time password for each new student and shows it to you once. You can print sign-in slips to hand out, copy the details, or download them as a file. If you would rather not hand out passwords, send each student an email link instead, and they set their own password. ClassKite never sends a password by email.

Adding one student at a time

The same Add Student card has two more options for a latecomer or a new arrival:

New Account creates a single account from a name and email address, with a one-time password that the student changes when they first sign in.
Add Existing adds a student who already has an account in your school, using their email address.

In some schools, the administrator manages student accounts centrally and teachers cannot create them. If that is the case for you, the class code still works as normal.

Which option should I use?

Use the class code when students can sign up themselves, for example, older students in a lesson where everyone has a device.
Use the import when you have a register to hand, when students are younger, or when you want every account ready before the first lesson.

Do students have to pay?

No. Student accounts are free on every plan.

Can I import a CSV file?

The class list import uses an Excel file (.xlsx). Download the template, fill it in or paste your list into it, and upload it back.

Do students need an email address?

Yes. Every student account is linked to an email address, whether the student signs up with a class code or you import them.

Can I remove a student from my class?

Yes. You manage the roster from the class panel. A student you have removed who tries to rejoin with the code will need your approval again.
